Besides Pho the other ubiquitous food in Vietnam is the
fried or fresh spring roll. These
rolls can have various fillings and but they are normally filled with pork,
vegetables and some noodles. I
like all of these combinations but I think I have found my favorite in Saigon. The
restaurant Quan 94 has been around for 24 years making fried spring rolls that
are about 95% crab and not much else; these are the Rolls Royce of fried spring
rolls.
Instead of being slender
rolls these were the size of Andre the Giant’s fingers and we so big that they
had to be cut in half for proper munching. The rolls are certainly a treat and thus are on the more
expensive side. This place seems
to be patronized by many Japanese and Koreans who must have read about it in
their guidebooks. Sometimes I
think the Japanese and Korean travel writers do a better job at finding good
food than English language books.
Either way this place is worth checking out. Quan 94 is one of those restaurants that have other things
on the menu but I think you are better off if you just get the fried spring
rolls and keep moving onto greener pastures.
